UNTHSC President Elected to NBME

Ronald Blanck, D.O., president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at Fort Worth, has been elected to the National Board of Medical Examiners. He will serve a four-year term as a member at large.

Kenyon Behrens, D.O., Honored in El Paso

Dr. Kenyon Behrens was named Doctor of the Year at Del Sol Medical Center in El Paso. He was nominated by physicians and hospital employees for his contributions to quality patient care. A 1984 UNTHSC/TCOM graduate, Dr. Behrens specializes in emergency medicine and family practice.

George Smith, D.O., Chosen as Olympic Torchbearer

Dr. George Smith, a family physician in West, Texas, has been chosen as an Olympic Torchbearer for the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. As such, he will run 2/10s of a mile through the Austin area carrying the official Olympic Torch.

Inspiration is the theme of the 2002 Olympic Torch Relay, and Dr. Smith’s notable activities surely embody the spirit of Olympic achievement. He has volunteered at all the local sports programs for his community for over 26 years, serving, among other capacities, as volunteer team physician for West ISD and volunteer medical director for West EMS.

In answer to the question ‘What or who inspires you every day,’ Dr. Smith stated: “My patients. I love to see them get well and ease their suffering.”

An active member of TOMA, he has served as a member of the House of Delegates for 12 years and is chair of the Convention Program Committee.

Dr. Smith noted that he feels “very honored and humbled” to be chosen to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity.

And, his philosophy towards life is “Work with the tools the good Lord has given you, share your experiences and knowledge with others, and always have a sense of humor; after all, laughter is the best medicine.”
